ABOUT ME

Copy of Hanna Ervasti Summer 2021.jpg

A Brief Background:

Hi! My name is Hanna Ervasti and I am a senior English and Communications Secondary Education major at Grove City College. I grew up in a military family and spent the majority of my childhood and teenage years both in Okinawa, Japan, and in a diverse neighborhood in Washington, D.C. During my high school years, I encountered countless teachers of impact that demonstrated strong content knowledge, an understanding of military culture, and an overall desire to connect and care for students. In such a malleable season of life, I believe it was important for me to have strong role-models in my life. This experience inspired me to become a teacher and pursue my passion for young folks at Grove City College. Since arriving at GCC, I have recieved rich educational experiences and developed a strong knowledge of educational practices, English, and Communications. My hobbies include photography, reading, and running.

My Teaching Philosophy: A Dedication to Impactful Teaching

The following list compiles my beliefs about education:

1. Effective, fair, and immediate enforcement of classroom management expectations is key to a successful year and pathway to building relationships with the students. I believe that classroom management is a form of loving my students well.

2. Learning for me does not stop after graduation. I am not only diving further into knowledge of my content, but I will also demonstrate a dedication to learning about my students' interests.

3. Above all else, take time to enjoy my students. Enjoy their work, their interests, and be sensitive to individual backgrounds. Attend their extra-curricular events and tie in pop-culture references to whatever we are learning in class.

4. Diverse curriculum expands the mind. As a future English teacher, I am committed to representing a variety of different styles, authors, and cultures within the material I incorporate into my classroom. Since I will undoubtedly be teaching a diverse set of learners, teaching literature that is inclusive of student backgrounds will help channel intrinsic motivation to learn as they see characters depicted in literature who have similar experiences to them.

5. Be a positive influence on the climate of the school, the faculty, and the students.
